Thanks for the great easy guide! I was able to take apart two iPods, one with a bad harddrive, and another with a bad headphone jack. I was able to replace the defective headphone jack with this guide. The only thing I had to do on my own was open the iPods, but i did that with a simple butter knife. Made my day! Thanks!

I followed the instructions in the video and my Ipod is back to normal…bought the headphone jack for 20 bucs.. thanks for posting the video. now here is a tip, do not remove the hard drive its not necessary; plus you can damage the hard drive cable or erase any files needed to operate your Ipod.. good luck

@ehaubjerg Great – glad to hear it’s working again!

It was the replacement part that was not working. I complained and got a new one. Everything is working now!

I did the replacement properly, but I’m not getting any sound from the right ear phone at all.

@looney6 Do you have a grounding strap or bracelet.
July 24th, 2010 at 8:11 am
@DigiExpress what serves as a good ground to discharge myself before opening up the ipod. Also i am planning on doing it infront of my desktop so i can watch this video, is that a smart idea?

@DigiExpress my ipod doesnt work i cant hear music thru the headphone jack what can i do? and how can i diagnose the problem?
July 24th, 2010 at 9:44 am
@Lman175 Yes it does, the 30GB jack is slightly different than 60/80GB jacks. It will not fit in the case.

Thanks a lot, this saved me a lot of money. Though it was frustrating and I was pretty sure I would end up with a broken iPod, I did not. @xendersshadowx I also had a permanently locked iPod the first time, I had to open it back up and make sure that the hold switch mechanism actually toggled the switch it is attached to. After that, no problems.
July 24th, 2010 at 11:50 am
@xendersshadowx It sounds like your hold switch is locked in the “hold” position. In addition, you may not have attached the hard drive ribbon cable correctly, which would cause your computer not to recognize it. Go back through the installation and make sure that both the hard drive ribbon and the hold switch ribbon are connected correctly.

I followed these instructions step by step but now my ipod is permanently locked. Tried all the easy hold down the two buttons blah blah advice (buttons & wheel have no response) and my ipod is not being recognized when i open itunes or my computer even though i hear it ding that i new device had been plugged in. any advice? I already ganked the video screen pretty good just trying to open it so i’m feeling like this isn’t going to work…
